Italy: Revolt of the trainee lawyers
Italy does not know the training to become a
one-size-fits-all lawyer; those who successfully passed the university exam in
law have to pass the so-called bar exam after a several-year internship with a
lawyer. Due to Corona, there have been peculiarities in the final oral exam in
2020; candidates initially had to wait eight months for the results of their
exams written in December 2019 and only 35% of candidates passed the written
exam. The examination boards only met online, justifications were not provided
- as is, however, customary in Italy.
The association of
trainee lawyers Aipavv has reported the precarious situation to the President
of the Republic. Among other things, it is suspected that the
lawyers on the examination boards fail the examinations if only to keep future
competition at bay. Honi soit qui mal y pense.
