The right to an effective defence in Italy can
become a costly affair that not everyone can afford. In a maxi-trial against
the Ndrangheta in Catanzaro against 479 accused, the public prosecutor's office
there is demanding 35,000 euros from a defence lawyer for copies of the first
237 folders of the file, and a further 48,000 euros for the 80,000 pages of
files that have accrued up to the end of the investigation. The digitalization
necessary for the production of the copies was very costly (source: Corriere
della Sera, 30.6.2020).
